REACH stands for Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals. It's a cornerstone regulation of the European Union (EU) aimed at protecting human health and the environment from the risks posed by chemicals.

Key Elements:

Registration: Manufacturers and importers of chemical substances exceeding 1 tonne per year in the EU must register them with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). This registration involves providing information on the substance's properties, potential hazards, and safe use.

Evaluation: ECHA evaluates the registered substances based on the information provided and may request further testing or data.

Authorisation: Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs) identified as posing a significant risk to human health or the environment require authorization for continued use. This process involves demonstrating the risks are adequately controlled or there are no suitable alternatives.

Restriction: Substances deemed too dangerous for continued use can be restricted or banned entirely within the EU.
